Mardigian Library dedicates artwork in memory of former librarian
On June 21, Mardigian Library held an evening reception in the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery to dedicate the artwork created to honor the memory of librarian Janet Yanosko Elkins. Elkins worked at the library from 1999-2008. The piece, titled “Never Alone,” hangs above Club Cappuccino in the library lobby. Family members, friends and co-workers raised funds to create this memorial.
The event featured artist Vera Sattler, who created the penguin artwork. Sattler told the story of how the piece was created. It was a lengthy process involving hard physical work. The mural is copper enameling, a process of fusing finely ground glass onto copper.
Family and co-workers fondly remembered Elkins, her dedication to the library, her brave battle with breast cancer and her fondness for penguins. Some of Elkins’ personal artwork was also on display in the gallery during the reception.
This article was updated July 31 to clarify the type of artwork created by Sattler.

Dear Editor, I would appreciate it if you would publish a correction in your next newsletter. The Penguin mural is copper enameling ( finely ground glass fused onto copper) and not stained glass. Because it has been assembled in a stained glass manner for soecial effects it may look like it. Thank you for making this correction. Vera R. Sattler , artist.
